Blue Sky 911 Service

Important information

All Blue Sky members are automatically enrolled in Blue Sky's Emergency Calling Service. Should you ever need to dial 911, your call will be routed to the Public Safety Answering Point in your area.

Please note that there are important differences between Blue Sky's Emergency Calling Service and a traditional 911 service. We urge you to read the following regarding these significant differences:

Signup for Emergency Calling Service (911 Dialing) with Blue Sky VoIP service
As stated above, Blue Sky automatically signs you up for Emergency Calling Service when you first order Voice-over IP. However, as you are allowed to choose an area code for your Blue Sky number that is not in your actual vicinity, you will be prompted to complete the physical address where your service will be located so that any future emergency calls may be routed to the proper Public Safety Answering Point. Should your address change in the future, you have the ability to edit your customer profile in the online account management section.

Dialing Emergency Services using Blue Sky VoIP service
In the event of an emergency, just dial 911 and your call will be connected to the Emergency Calling Service.

Length of time for Emergency Calling Service to be activated or changed
Once you sign up for Blue Sky - or should you make changes to your Emergency Calling Service - it will take up to THREE business days for the service to be activated or the change to take effect.

How Blue Sky's Emergency Calling Service (911 Dialing) works
Should you ever have to dial 911 for Emergency Service, Blue Sky will route your Voice over IP call to your Public Safety Answering Point - the agency that directs emergency calls to the appropriate emergency service (police department, fire department, etc.) near you.

Your appropriate Public Safety Answering Point is determined by the physical address you supply us when you sign up for Sky Blue service, it is imperative that you keep this information updated in your Blue Sky account. Otherwise, if Blue Sky does not have your correct address, your call could be routed to a Public Safety Answering Point not in your immediate area, thereby delaying emergency services to your location.

Traditional phone 911 services vs. Emergency Calling Service on Blue VoIP service
Blue Sky's Emergency Calling Service is different from the traditional 911 service in that Blue Sky Voice over IP calls are routed to the Public Safety Answering Point's general access line. This is different from the 911 Emergency Response Center.

To be clear, when your 911 call is routed to the Public Safety Answering Point, you will need to clearly state:

  • The nature of your emergency.
  • Your location.
  • Your telephone number.
Public Safety Answering Point personnel will not have the above information when answering your call. Upon receiving it from you, they can then assist you and move quickly to provide you with the appropriate assistance. (Contacting police, an ambulance, etc.)

Why provide Blue Sky with your physical address?
Because your Blue Sky number's area code can be for an area code where you do not reside (a Florida area code for calls received in New York, for example), we can only notify the Public Safety Answering Point that serves your area if we know your physical location. To ensure that we have your current physical address, please keep your Blue Sky account information up-to-date. In fact, should you be traveling for an extended period of time and use a Blue Sky phone adaptor, we encourage you to change your address to the area in which you are traveling to ensure that we may route emergency calls to the closest Public Safety Answering Point while you're traveling.

Should you need to call 911 from an area different than that listed in your account, it is imperative that you alert the Emergency Services operator to your exact location, as well as your phone number and nature of your emergency.

Blue Sky Emergency Service Unavailability
There may be instances when Blue Sky 911 Dialing may be inaccessible. Emergency Calling Service will be unavailable:

  • If there is a power outage.
  • If there is a broadband service outage.
  • If your account is suspended or other reasons.
Emergency Calling Service availability when you're using an international phone number as your primary Blue Sky number
If your international phone number is your primary Blue Sky number, your 911 call will be routed to a general Emergency Services center instead of a local Public Safety Answering Point. You should be prepared to provide your address and a U.S. phone number where the operator can reach you.

If your international phone number is not your primary Blue Sky number, our Emergency Calling Service will work as described above.

Testing Blue Sky 911 Dialing
We have done extensive testing to ensure that our 911 Emergency Dialing service operates correctly with your VoIP service. If, however, you choose to test 911 dialing, PLEASE do so only one time. When you do, be sure to inform the Public Safety Answering Point operator who answers your call that there is no emergency and that you are testing your emergency service to confirm that it is working.
